Prayer for the Future

Almighty God, we the community of St. Johns give thanks to you as we celebrate our first 150 years and for opportunities past, present and future to worship, study, and proclaim the good name of Jesus Christ. We thank you for the gifts of faith and fellowship that we have experienced during our 150 year history.

As we come together today to celebrate and commit ourselves to your direction for our future, we lift our hearts in gratitude to you, O Lord, for all of those who helped prepare the way for us- for worship, devotion, service and care of this beloved Church and property. For these and all your blessings, we give you thanks.

We pray that your Holy Spirit will guide us now as we begin this campaign for the future of St. Johns. Trusting in your love, help us to move forward with open and willing hearts so that we can continue to grow and serve you. Guide us, so that we may continue to meet new opportunities with courage, love and steadfastness. We ask this in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Brickwork
~$40,000-$50,000

All Saints Chapel was originally added to St. John's in 1961 and was the first part of the church to have air conditioning. Unfortunately, the design of the chapel's roof has led to water infiltration into the bricks of one of the walls. This water damage is causing the bricks to crumble.
Picture
Repairs have been performed in the past, but the attempt to preserve the exact aesthetic of the church has meant these repairs were only temporary fixes.
The goal of this brickwork is not only to repair the damage to the wall, but also to adjust the building, ensuring that the roof fully extends over the walls, protecting the building from weathering. While this will impact the exterior appearance of the chapel and increase the cost of the project somewhat, it will prevent the same water damage from happening, setting the church up for the next 150 years!

Church Windows
~$30,000

After years of exposure to the elements, the window frames and mechanisms throughout the entire church have slowly degraded. Now, many have small drafts and none open.
This disrepair means that not only are we unable to open the windows to let a pleasant breeze flow through the church on nice days, the poor seal drives up our utility costs in both the summer and winter. Fixing the windows will not only make St. John's more welcoming to our congregation and the community, but it will also help with the long term sustainability of the church.

Accessible Bathrooms
~$70,000

Our building was originally built in 1924. At that time, there was no concept of handicap accessible bathrooms, which were not defined until the American's with Disabilities Act of 1990.

Consequently, St. John's Episcopal Church currently does not have accessible bathrooms.  This makes it difficult for many in our community, and many in our congregation, to feel comfortable in our church. In order to fix this, the church wants to renovate the old kitchen and the adjacent bathrooms to allow for handicap accessibility. This will further support our parish and allow us to serve as better stewards of space as we continue to open our church for other groups and events.

Looking to the Future

St. John's Episcopal Church has been at the heart of downtown Mason City for 150 years. We have touched so many lives in a wide variety of ways and we are looking forward to being a part of this community for the next 150.

We hope that you will help us ensure that our building is ready for this future, where traditions, like the Blessing of the Animals, and new ministries, like the donated coat rack, continue to abound.
A growing, vibrant church, committed to building disciples, growing in faith, and serving our neighbors in Christ's name.
